Outdoors and S'mores

First step for troops planning troop camping experiences. Teaches adults the steps in working with girls to plan and carry out an overnight experience using indoor facilities (lodges, cabins, etc.) with kitchens and indoor bathrooms at council camps as well as other approved camp facilities. In addition, this course covers health and safety considerations, facilities available at council camps, meal planning, kaper charts, equipment and packing.

All supplies for fire building and cooking S’mores will be provided by the instructor.

Pre-requisite: online Volunteer Orientation and Trips & Overnights. Participants should bring Volunteer Essentials, pen and paper and something to kneel on. Dress for the weather (will be outdoors part).

Sewing Basics

Learn the basics of hand sewing: how to thread a needle, knot it, and begin sewing hiding the knots when possible. In addition, you can learn mending basics like how to sew on a patch, a button, or hem a garment.

Fabric scraps (if you do not have any mending or other participants don’t have enough to share). Includes complete basic sewing kit with notions: needles, thread, needle threader, mini scissors/snippers, a seam ripper, tape measure, sewing ruler, etc.

Bring a variety of mending items, such as garments missing a button (with matching button, if available), needing a patch, needing a hem (such as pant legs or skirts); bring your favorite decorative sewing kit bag/box/bin.

Evening stargazing. We'll meet in the classroom under the dining hall for a brief star talk and to get star charts & handouts. If skies are clear, we'll go outside for a guided tour of the planets, stars & constellations of the winter sky.

Instructor will bring a green laser to point out the winter constellations. Star maps and other handouts will be provided. Weather permitting, solar scopes will be set up sometime during the day on Saturday to look for solar flares and sunspots.

Gloves, scarves, hats, warm coats & a small flashlight. Binoculars optional. Reclining lawn chair & blanket if clear skies (optional).
