Girl Scout Challenge

Last updated 04/05/03

There is a lot of paperwork in this complicated process. Four worksheets have to be completed, each with time lines of things to complete and reflections on what you learned. On top of that there is a 15-hour service project.  We've worked on worksheets 1-3 in December and April. Pat suggests that during the summer we have workdays when you can come over to her house to work on either your notebook or the worksheets that will go into your notebook. We'll begin on Tuesdays beginning June 4.

Service Projects

The Henderson Park Clean-Up

The Clean-Up after the Service Unit Bridging Ceremony went quite well. The committee (Anne, Chandler, Christina, Diana, Jessie, Evelyn, and Stephanie) was very organized. Nicole was able to come and help out. Mrs. Jennings troop went all the way around the lake, and Brownie troops cleaned up around the pavilion and playground. It was a good day. The committee put in several hours of time meeting with the Watershed Alliance, scooping out the park, and getting materials together. Here's how it went:

February 5, 1 hour [Anne, Jessie, Stephanie] Meeting with Minnette Urich from the Watershed Alliance
March 16, 2 hours [Anne, Chandler, Christina, Jessie, Evelyn, Stephanie] Planning meeting at Callaway's
March 23, 1 hour [Anne, Christina, Jessie, Stephanie] First trip to check out the park
May 10, 1 hour [Anne] Called Kroger to get bags, picked up bags, organized materials
May 3, 1 hour [Anne, Christina, Diana, Evelyn] Second trip to the park to make sure everyone was clear on the plan
May 5, 3 hours [Anne, Chandler, Christina, Jessie, Evelyn, Nicole] Our first troop-sponsored park Clean-Up

Continuing our service project for Part 4 of the Girl Scout Challenge, we decided to hold a summer clean-up that will be open to the public. Christina will head up this one, and she's looking for committee members. She will use Calling Post to let you know when things are happening, and if you're in town, you can pick up some of your 15 hours for this project. She has also granted Pat full hassle permission. Poor Christina. Remember that if you'd rather work out your own 15-hour community service project, you certainly can do that instead.

Special Olympics

Elizabeth chose to do her Service Project by volunteering for the Special Olympics. She worked 5 hours as a Track & Field athlete escort April 18, 2002 and volunteered 10 additional hours as a volleyball court manager & referee for the Special Olympics Georgia Summer Games for the unified & traditional teams at Emory University on June 1-2, 2002.
