The Bad Stuff

Our weaver friend Alicia Long has lost nearly everything in the fire that destroyed her apartment and killed her cats last Tuesday night. Ray and Andy Callaway borrowed the Boy Scout Troop 534’s trailer and joined other friends of hers yesterday to help try to salvage what she could. The only furniture that she could save is a table, two wooden chairs, and her loom. The loom is filthy, but if she can clean it up, she will be able to replace the parts that were lost. She is hoping to be able to get the smoke smell out of the clothes that were not burned. If you need her mom’s address to send her a note or card, Email Pat.

The Good Stuff - December 16 4:30-9:30

Next Friday we will leave from school by carpools to volunteer for the Empty Stocking Fund in Santa’s Village on the 4:30-7:30 shift at Atlanta City Hall East on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Mrs. Callaway and Mrs. Unger will drive, and Mrs. Gargiullo will need to know whether you will bring yourselves or ride with one of them. Parking is a real problem, and we will be downtown, so we want NOBODY to walk from a parking lot alone. If you plan to drive yourself, please let Pat know so she can Email you the parking instructions.

Evelyn, Diana, and Anne will be home in time to join us. Chandler, Christina, Rossie, Tabby, and Katie are taking exams that day and will not be able to get back in time. Liz is having her wisdom teeth out - Ouch!! We have not heard from Stephanie or Jenny. The Empty Stocking Fund people want commitments; so let Mrs. Gargiullo know if you’re coming, please!

Everyone under age 18 will need a signed permission slip to hand to your driver when you are picked up from school. The form will come separately in your Email, so please remember to have it signed and bring it along. You will need about $5 for the pizza fund.

We will finish the evening by eating pizza at the same restaurant that we’ve been to for several years and by exchanging Secret Santa gifts. If you’ve forgotten who your Secret Santa is, Email Pat. The spending limit we decided on is $10.

More Good Stuff - Reunion Brunch on Friday, December 30

Pat is planning a brunch for all of us who can get together on Friday morning at 11:00 for brunch at the Callaway house. Old girls, new girls, and leaders are all invited. The menu is ham, cheese grits, and curried fruit. Anyone who wants to bring a covered dish in addition is welcome to do so. Anyone who wants to invite a past member, like for example Aisha, is welcome to do that, too.

World Thinking Day

World Thinking Day celebrates the birthdays of Girl Guides/Girl Scouts founder Robert, Lord Baden-Powell (1857-1941) and World Chief Guide, Olave, Lady Baden-Powell (1889-1977).

In the United States, Girl Scouting grew out of the friendship between Juliette Gordon Low and Lord Baden-Powell and his sister, Agnes, who began Girl Guiding. World Thinking Day celebrates that friendship and the sisterhood of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the globe. The day is also a time to donate funds to the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund

Girl Scout Week

Girl Scout Birthday, March 12, commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia.

Girl Scout Week is celebrated each March, starting with Girl Scout Sunday and ending with Girl Scout Sabbath on a Saturday, and it always includes the Girl Scout Birthday, March 12.

Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath give girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as a Girl Scout. If a place of worship is the group sponsor, girls may perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. These days can also be a time when girls explore other faiths.
