Please try to attend our Summer Planning Meeting -  2 PM on June 30th!

We had a great trip to Savannah!

Savannah Trip May 24-27, 2005

Tuesday, May 24           We left Atlanta at 10:45 AM and arrived on Tybee Island around 3:30.  We rented a terrific house on Tybee Island that was right next to the sidewalk over the dunes.  After settling in, we divided into small groups and enjoyed dinner at some local Tybee restaurants.

Wednesday, May 25    Day at the beach:
In the morning, some of us went on an early walk along the beach. The weather was brisk & breezy, so none of us spent long enough on the beach to get sunburned. We made sandwiches & ate lunch back at the house. We spent a lazy afternoon flying kites, bicycling on the beach or reading in the hammock at the beach house. Later we went shopping in the River Street Market, ate dinner at the famous Pirates House and then took an evening ghost-talk carriage tour of the historic district.

Thursday, May 26          Day at the Juliette Low Birthplace:
We checked in at 9:30 and got our schedule. We toured the house, shopped in the gift store, and had our own court of awards on the balcony in the garden. Lunch was a pre-ordered Blimpie sub that we ate in beautiful Wright square. We had time afterwards to wander around the historic district and do some shopping. In the afternoon we had a special activity on 19th century fashion during which we got to try on a corset & hoop skirt. We had a special Victorian Supper from 4:30-7:30 for which we dressed up in the Victorian costumes provided by the Birthplace. We learned napkin folding and Victorian dinner etiquette. We then were treated to a country-style dinner of chicken, okra & tomatoes, green beans, red rice, macaroni & cheese, cornbread and peach cobbler (yumm!) served on the Birthplace’s Wedgewood china, silver, glassware and linens. We were even allowed to have a photo session with all of us in our fancy dresses on the inside staircase.

Friday, May 27              After getting a new battery for Trudy's car and returning the bicycles, we checked out of our beach house at 10:00 a.m. & returned safe & sound to Atlanta.

Here’s our list of sojourners: Laura, Callie, Karen, Maria, Rossie, Diana, Tabby, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Brittany, Evelyn, Anne, Audrey, Beth, Marie, Pat, Mahfuz, Janet and Trudy.

Gold Award News Flash

This year we have 4 Gold Awardees:  Evelyn, Tabby, Rossie & Liz. Evelyn made paleontology activity boxes for Coralwood School. Tabby conducted a panel discussion for middle school girls called Striving for Success. Rossie & Liz enhanced the nature trail at Lakeside HS. This year there were only 8 Gold Awardees from DeKalb/Clayton/Newton/Rockdale counties & we had 4 of them!  Hooray!

Iraqi Children Project

Through a project begun by a soldier after a tour of duty in Iraq, a colleague of Pat's has learned about a young man who's serving in northern Iraq. He says that when he's on patrol, he tries to give these desperately poor children, many of them Kurds, paper and pencils. She is collecting small items--small writing pads, small boxes of crayons, markers, or pencils--and when her box is filled she will send it to Sgt. Conkright. If you would like to bring items to our next meeting, we can contribute to this project to help the Iraqi children.
