Welcome New Members

We were so glad to welcome Tabby, Stephanie E., and Kasey into the troop at our August meeting. We know we'll all have a great time together.

We've got a meeting on Friday the 13th!

That's this Friday night at the Callaway's. Socializing begins at 7:00, meeting at 7:30.

We'll need to talk about our camping trip and our Fernbank patch project. The Brownie leader Mrs. Bose will be with us at 8:00 so that we can get specific about the trip. Katie, Nicole, and Kasey will be in charge of the meeting.

Also getting closer by the minute is the Six Flags celebration of our 90th birthday on November 2. If you haven't already given Mrs. Unger your $24 for your ticket, please bring it Friday night. If you've already paid, you paid $22, but tickets after August 24 are $24.

Camping with Brownie Troop 21432, October 4-6

This will be our Brownie friends' first camping trip. One thing we need to do on Friday night is to decide who can go to their meeting 4:45-6:00 p.m. next Friday, September 20, and exactly what we want to do with them at their meeting. Mrs. Bose will want to know our plans for the trip, and she will help us decide what Try-Its we will help the Brownies earn. One thing they need to do for sure is to make S'Mores. We can help with that!

Fernbank Patch Project

Chandler took notes last month about the activities that we're trying to organize for the March 22 Girl Scout Day at Fernbank. Several girls were planning to try to write up the actual activity for the patch project as we did for our Zoo Patch. We're hoping that those who have actually done this will bring their ideas to the meeting. We'll try to nail down some specifics to send to Terry Otto.

The list of proposed activities started with a proposal that Rossie, Elizabeth, and Evelyn put together and grew some last month. Several girls agreed to work on parts of the project. Here's Chandler's list:

Tabby

B.J. kids room

both-sensing nature

bird watching

Liz

planetarium

observatory

Evelyn

scavenger hunt

finding fossils

Rossie

forest

Mrs. Unger

rose garden (maybe)

Chandler

making cards for special exhibit

Not spoken for yet

shells and salt water aquarium

c-s star gallery

We're in charge of developing the patch and coordinating the actual event in March. We decided to have a committee for developing the patch and a committee for planning the début day. One thing we need to do right away is to develop a time line for when we will complete all these things

There will be work for everyone, even girls who can't actually be there on the March day. For the patch we need a patch goal, a history and information section, activities broken down by age level, resources for leaders, and a plan of how many activities to do for each age level to complete the patch. For the début day, we'll need to figure out what activities we can do, what Fernbank people will help us staff them, how many girls we can handle at Fernbank that day, how we'll move them through activities, and all the details (like lunch) that we need to think through.

The Big Trip

At the last meeting, Pat asked everyone to look at the websites for Our Cabańa, Our Chalet, and Pax Lodge. There are links to these sites from our website, where you are probably reading this. We have several opinions about what to do, including doing one big trip in 2003 and a different one in 2004. Whatever we choose to do, we need to begin our planning soon. Council deadlines have some leeway, but after a certain point, it is too late to begin planning. Let's not be too late!

Wonderful Time in the Woods

Mrs. Unger's boss, Dr. Reeves, and his wife took a bunch of us on a little trek in the woods. Christina, Karen, Evelyn, Anne, Jessie, and Stephanie H. reviewed and renewed their map and compass skills. The incredibly courageous Dr. Paul Gargiullo accompanied this wild group. Having climbed to a ridge in the Oconee National Forest, they had to find their way back. They went over, and sometimes under, what they saw on the map and did so well that Dr. Reeves wants them to start competing in Georgia Orienteering Club meets. It was a real romp in the woods! We think that we need to register Dr. and Mrs. Reeves as adult members of our troop. These folks are too great to let them get away!

See you Friday night!
