The Photography Interest Project Patch

Laura, Maria, Karen, Brittany, Crystal, Callie, and Jessie

We had two professional photographers from Showcase Video, a local store that caters to professional photographers, visit our meeting on March 17, 2006. Helene Mewborne is recently retired, and Judy Weissinger is presently on staff. Laura, Maria, Karen and Brittany were present the whole time, and Jesse came after work, about an hour after the presentation began. Callie was not able to be at the meeting, but she is taking photography at Lakeside, and has completed all the activities that we did at the meeting. Crystal missed this meeting, but Judy says that she will see her at the shop and catch her up.

Skill Builders

#1 Judy and Helene talked with us about the different types of cameras and the advantages and disadvantages of each kind. Along with the different kinds of cameras, Judy brought a selection of lenses and filters, and we were able to try them out.
#2 Judy brought along several 35 mm cameras, including some of the professional kinds that cost more than $1000. We were able to try them out and compare how the different settings changed what you would see through the lens. Judy also brought books about learning to use all the settings that had comparisons of pictures of the same subjects taken with different settings.
#4 Judy and Helene covered the topics of composition, background, distance, depth of field and lighting very thoroughly.

Technology

#4 About half the cameras Judy brought were digital. We were able to learn about how they work and how the images are used. Judy was able to tell us how professional photographers use digital images in many situations where the norm used to be 35 mm.
#5 We spent a good bit of our time with Judy and Helene discussing digital photography. Several of us already know how to used PhotoShop and other programs to manipulate the images.

Service Project

#2 We were invited to photograph the 3 Leaves Service Unit Bridging Ceremony on Sunday, April 30 at Oak Grove Methodist Church.

Career Exploration

#4 At our meeting on April 14, Karen, Brittany and Mrs. Gargiullo’s presented information on the famous photograph Margaret Bourke-White. We were all impressed with her courage and her beautiful photographs.
#5 Maria is a photographer on the Lakeside yearbook staff.
